Essay Contest
Pick up your essay contest form at the Education/Outreach main table. Visit the IGARSS 2008 exhibit hall. Talk with vendors and participants in the Education/Outreach booths. Winning Essays will be published on the Earthzine Web Site (http://www.earthzine.org). Your essay should contain at least the following information:
- 1-2 quotes from exhibitors
- Discussion of the types of vendors and products
- Discussion of what you learned from the exhibitors and workshops
- Discussion of your overall impression of IGARSS 2008
- No more than 2 pages in length
Art Contest, Exhibits, and Seminars
Students in grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 provide a visual insight into how experiences at IGARSS‘08 have impacted them. Awards are presented to the winners.Close your eyes and visualize some of the highlights of IGARSS 2008 including registration, exhibits, people, posters, etc. What colors do you recall seeing the most (yellow, blue, etc.) Use those colors and sights in your design of an IGARSS 2008 Mousepad contest entry. Mousepads and paints will be provided.
Earthzine Interviews
What changes do you see in your environment? How have Earth images shaped your view of the world? Observe and share how you see your world changing with Earthzine. Earthzine will interview symposium participants to share with the Earth observing community. Earthzine is a publication of IEEE that aims to foster greater awareness of the Earth through Her observation.
Mathematics of Remote Sensing
Student teams bring their collective wisdom to the solution of mathematics problems related to remote sensing and climate change. You can sign up to join a team at the education and outreach booth. Teams are challenged to solve 20 multiple choice mathematics questions. Awards are presented to each member of the winning teams.
Forest Watch
Forest Watch is a K-12 science outreach program begun at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) in 1991 that engages pre-college students in providing researchers with a signifi cant amount of reliable data on annual responses of white pine (Pinus strobes) to ground-level ozone across the New England region. The Forest Watch workshop will present key components of this successful outreach program and participants will have the opportunity to discuss aspects of their own research that may be appropriate for use in developing similar K-12 programs for schools in their own area.
